[Production] The 15,000-TEU-container vessel arrived in shipyard to install LNG as Fuel Exoskeleton Tank
On the afternoon of August 31, a large German 15,000-TEU container ship successfully alongside at the Berthing No.7 to prepare to install LNG as fuel exoskeleton tank. By then, the 15,000 container vessel would be put into operation with LNG environmentally friendly fuel as a power source, and the   operating cost would be effectively reduced.
The 15,000-TEU container ship is the first large-scale ship which would be retrofitted with LNG as fuel in the world. The technology and requirements of the project is high and complex. Hence this project has attracted the LNG ship industry’s attentions.
The LNG fuel exoskeleton tank has a total length of 13 meters, a width of 46 meters, and a height of 21.6 meters. It is composed of 17 blocks, of which the DS01 dome seat block is 6 meters long and 5 meters wide. The main difficulty of this is the precision control of segmented production and total assembly. The technology requirement is extremely high.
The project was commenced in October, 2019. All participating departments worked together to overcome many technical difficulties. Although the sudden epidemic COVID-19 had seriously affected the progress of the project, various departments responded in a prompt manner and adjusted the construction plan to ensure that the process were progressed on schedule.
HRDD took technological innovation, optimized technology, and adopted one-time lifting solution of the world‘s first LNG membrane system(Mark III HD) integrated by full exoskeleton tank, significantly reduced the conversion time and project cost.
At present, the LNG as fuel project has entered the final stage, and all the production key points are carried out in an orderly manner. The ship-owner has recognized the progress, safety and quality of the project.
This conversion project is demonstrating that Huarun Dadong‘s strength of construction has entered a new milestone era.
It is expected that by Jan of 2021, the retrofitting project for the LNG as fuel of 15,000 TEU of large container ships will be fully completed.
